You bought your jewelry and you want to preserve its sparkling. I often get asked by my customers how to do it correctly. Sometimes, even with the best intentions, you can do more damage than restore the brilliance of your jewelry. Therefore, I will share few tips with you about how to care for the most common type of jewelry.
Avoid keeping them in a humid environment, separate them by type and store them in a dark, dry place and limit exposure to the air of the delicate pieces.
You can maintain your jewelry sparkling and shiny just with few simple supplies like: mild soap such as dishwashing liquid, toothpaste, baking soda, a soft toothbrush or makeup brush.
The more delicate pieces you may have to clean it professionally, so it is important to know the proper method to clean each type of jewelry.
Silver jewelry - if it was stored for a long time in a humid temperature will start to tarnish due to oxidation. That is why it is best to be stored in a jewelry box lined with felt. In order to remove the tarnish from your silver jewelry, is best to clean the piece as soon as you notice the oxidization.
If you have a piece of silver jewelry with pearls or other delicate stones, a quick and effective method is to start buffing with a silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish and restore the shine to the silver.
As an alternate method you can polish your silver jewelry with toothpaste and a soft toothbrush or a cloth by rubbing the tarnished area gently.Allow the paste a few minutes to work, then wash it off and rinse well with water. Finish the process by wiping with a soft cloth to dry.
For heavily tarnished silver jewelry, mix three parts baking soda to one part water. Wet the silver part and apply the cleaner with a soft cloth, work the paste into the crevices, then rinse and buff it dry. A quick and effective way to restore the shine of silver is by using a liquid silver jewelry cleaner. So, place the jewelry in the liquid silver cleaner, swirl it around for about 10 sec. and remove it. After that rinse the jewelry with water and dry it with a soft cloth or a paper towel.
Do not use liquid silver to clean jewelry with pearls or gemstones.
Gold jewelry - does not tarnish like the silver, but it can still collect dirt after regular use, which it will make it look dull and less glowing.
To clean your gold jewelry is important to use a mild soap such as dishwashing liquid, a soft cloth or toothbrush. In a small bowl place the gold pieces, then cover it with warm water and soap solution. Allow the pieces to soak for at least 15 min., then use the brush and scrub it gently. Rinse it with warm water and dry it with a soft cloth.
Pearls - are delicate tiny wonders of nature and are also the only gem created by a living organism.
It is considered to be the most magical and feminine of all gems. The variety of colours, shapes, sizes and origin makes pearls most fascinating. Because of their delicate nature, pearls should be cared for with caution, avoid any chemicals, even jewelry cleaners. Store them in a dark and dry location, preferably in a jewelry box.
To clean your pearls use mild soap, water and a soft cloth.
Pearls should be put on only after you applied your desired cosmetics, lotion or perfume. Let any of this product to dry for a while before putting on your pearls.
Pearls have a sheen that can be damaged easily by chemicals. Always remove your pearls before swimming or showering. Store your pearls away from other jewelry, as they can easily become scratched or worn down by metals and other gemstones.
